Self-Assessment

The artifacts below are just one part of an online course that I developed for the Independent Study High School covering Web Design. It pulls together many of the concepts that were learned through other courses in my Master's Degree program.

This ties into NETS standard 2-a, 2-c, 3-a, 3-c, 3-d, and 5-b. It represents designing and developing digital experiences and assessments in an online environment, models digital age work and learning as an online course, and continues professional growth and leadership.

I feel that I could make the process of writing the course content smoother if I could do this again. This was my first attempt at creating an online course based on a specific textbook, and the time I spent learning how to write end-of-unit questions could be improved.

I learned that the process of moving content from a text-based source to an online environment doesn't simply mean copying sections of text and repeating questions from a book. It requires thought into the learning process of the distance students taking the course, and how to best test for their knowledge retention.

Content Explanation

The first artifact is an introduction document that gives an overview of what a student or proctor should expect out of the online course. It outlines the topics, the tests, and the general schedule that can be used. The video is a simple clip used to introduce the content of the course to the student for the first time, kept short and concise. They were both created to become part of a course that will be available both online and in print format with an accompanying textbook.

Process Reflection

I was asked by one of my coworkers if I would be willing to create an online course for the High School that they would have available to students in the next years. Since I have a great deal of experience in web design they felt I would be a good fit to convert the textbook content into something they could use in their online learning management system. The only obstacle I faced in this was working out the process needed to produce the large number of questions they feed into a randomized test creation program. The general structure of the course was already in place based on the content of a textbook, but the online components I developed were to expand upon the text and give real-world examples where applicable.
